The Question That Stopped Me

It was Sunday in my home. It was early evening and the three of us, Laura, Jordan, and myself, were in the kitchen.  Jordan lamented, “My spring break is over. This is my last day of freedom.” Laura asked her, “How is it going to end?” In typical Jordan fashion she said, “I am awesome so you should bake me a cake!” Self esteem, no problem here!

That was so funny and at the same time it caused me to stop.  How is it going to end? What a marvelous question. If we asked ourselves that more often I believe our lives would be better. How is it going to end?

For instance  if a married man at his work was being helpful to a female colleague and she said, “Hey, thanks for all the help. Let me make it up to you by taking you to a real nice out of the way lunch spot. My treat!”

Now if he would ask himself the question, how is this going to end? I believe he would decide to politely decline the invitation. The best case scenario would be nothing happens; however, he hurts her feelings. The worst case scenario something happens, and he destroys his personal and professional life.

This question is applicable to many situations. For example, if you are planning on speaking harshly to someone, especially someone you love, stop! Ask yourself the question, “How is this going to end?” I’m sure you might reconsider your approach.

Another example,  if your sister is annoying you with her driving and you want to annoy her back in retaliation, stop. Ask yourself, “How is this…” You might not want to get into a fight while she is driving and she has your life in her hands, maybe?

How about a more challenging situation? A situation like I am facing. I know my days are numbered (so are everyone else’s); but, I have a terminal disease and it is good for me to stop and ask myself,  how is this going to end?

It is a sobering thought and after a lot of prayer I have an answer: By becoming a wonderful memory for the ones I leave behind.

You see, all my actions are aimed at creating wonderful memories for everyone who visits me and gets to know me. In my case it is really easy. All I have to do is laugh a little, cry a little and become transparent with my struggles. Most importantly include my visitors in my journey. Give them a view of my trials and triumphs, and when possible share my faith which is the only thing keeping me going.

I may not be able to move but I am able to move people.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

So much pain in life can be spared by pausing and asking ourselves the two simple questions that you have outlined here. "How is this going to end? and Memories never die." There are no do-overs in this life, but there are new opportunities every day to do things right.Thank you dear Akhil!
