My Secret

My nurse from hospice came to visit me. She was commenting on how well I was doing at my advanced stage of ALS. The hospice manager, Sue Curry, and her team have marveled at how I am not experiencing the normal struggles. They wanted to know my secret which prompted me to write this blog.

Typically, ALS patients struggle with a variety of issues, but two common ones are muscle fasiculations and cramping.  If you are not sure what fasiculations are, they are muscle twitches that tend to come in rapid-fire form without ceasing, at times, for hours.

It looks like a frog jumping under one’s skin.  They can be quite a nuisance, leading to lack of sleep and an inability to focus among other things.  Cramping is just what it sounds like.

What is my secret?  I have found that by following the Deanna Protocol, my fasiculations are much less than when not following the protocol and I have virtually no muscle cramping.

You might be wondering what is the Deanna Protocol.  It is a formula for taking dietary supplements that seem to help alleviate these symptoms of ALS.  The supplements can be purchased from the vendor of your choice and there are a wide variety of options in terms of price.  Since supplements are not currently regulated by the FDA, I recommend sticking with a reputable company.

You can find more information on the Deanna Protocol by visiting http://www.winningthefight.org/t/deanna-protocol .  If you choose to follow the protocol, it is requested that you log in to their website monthly to record your disease status.

I have made one minor change to the protocol.  It calls for taking Caprylic Acid which is a primary component of coconut oil.  Since I have a feeding tube, I choose to take up to nine tablespoons of organic coconut oil per day through my feeding tube.  That gives me the benefit of the caprylic acid as well as the additional calories and other benefits of coconut oil.

See http://althealthworks.com/3477/video-how-this-man-reversed-his-als-lou-gehrigs-disease-symptoms-by-using-coconut-oil/  and http://informahealthcare.com/doi/pdf/10.3109/17482968.2012.671629 for more information.

While the Deanna Protocol is by no means a cure for ALS, for me, it is providing some much-needed relief from some of the irritating  effects of ALS.  The cost was minimal and the risk was minimal so , for me, it was worth trying. I am pleased with the results and I wanted to give you the information so you could decide if the Deanna Protocol may help you.

Now, do you want to know my real secret?  No matter what, stay positive and expect good things!  God has a plan for each and every one of us.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Jeremiah 29:11

The video is Akhil's journey with ALS.  Painful to see but the faith his family shows is uplifting.

God continues to show his love for us through his people.  Thank you to everyone who has reached out to us, prayed for us, visited Akhil, brought us a meal and served us however God led you to serve.  Continue to follow those urgings from God in serving those who are struggling.
