Is God making me sick for a reason?

My friends and church members have tried to “help” me make sense of my illness.  Here are their thoughts:
    • This suffering is punishment for my sins.
    • I am reaping what I have planted.
    • God is angry with me.
    • God is teaching and disciplining me with this suffering.
    • God is using this sickness to help develop patience in me.
    • Healing isn’t for everyone.
    • God is sovereign and He will pick and choose who is healed.
These actually make sense, but let’s see what the bible says!

Picture
One of craftiest lies against God is to believe that healing isn’t available for everyone. This is simply not true.  Healing is available for everyone, and for everything, but people don’t always receive it.

A major obstacle to not receive healing is not knowing God’s Will is to heal.

“my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. “ Hosea 4:6

Your faith will go only as far as your knowledge of God’s word.

Some believe that healing isn’t for us today.  Healing died out with the apostles of the New Testament.  Others believe that God gives you sickness to teach you something.

WRONG!

How does one explain Jesus going about doing His Father’s business – healing all who were sick?  Was Jesus countering his father’s will?

Either healing is God’s will or being sick is His will, not both.  If sickness is God’s will why do we pray for healing?  Why do we pray to get out of God’s will?  We should shut down all hospitals and doctors offices IF sickness is from God.

I have heard people say they don’t believe God will heal them because they have been too sinful and are unworthy, or are just not good enough.

WRONG Again!

Picture
To know if it is God’s Will to heal, you can’t listen to other people.  The only source is to read the Word of God yourself.

I have found it is a bad idea to base your faith or belief system on your past experiences or other people’s stories.

Healing is a gift, like salvation, already paid for at Calvary.  All I need to do is accept it by faith, just like salvation.
I heard the salvation message, believed it and received it - by going forward to the altar, NOT because of what I heard someone say!

Every promise of God is received the same way.  Hear the message, believe it and receive it.

Picture
In the begining:

When God created man, there was no provision for healing because there was no sickness.  Adam and
Eve lived and walked in divine health.  Then sin entered the world and the earth became Satan’s property.

The moment Satan took control, everything about the earth became cursed because Satan came to steal, to
kill, and to destroy (John 10:10).

Sickness, disease, despair, and destruction spread. The earth was cursed.

Enter Jesus, the last Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45) and his sacrificial death on the cross redeemed us from the curse.

We see in Galatians 3:13, Jesus has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for
us.  So sickness is under the curse and we are redeemed from that curse, so we are redeemed from
sickness.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of sickness but people are still sick.  He died so people can go to heaven yet people are still going to hell.

If you read both the Old and New Testaments, you will find many scriptures about healing.  God has always provided healing for His people.

God gets no glory from our sickness or disease.  He is ONLY glorified when we are healed!  He takes no pleasure in harming us, and He never will.

Picture
From where does sickness originate?

There are several places in scripture that point to the source of sickness.  Here are a couple:

Luke 13:16 “Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?"

Jesus called sickness bondage from Satan, Jesus came to set her free.  He came to set all of us free.

Acts 10:38  “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.”

More support that Jesus came to heal the sick who have been oppressed by the devil.

Jesus destroyed things that are of the devil – Poverty, sickness, strife.

Bottom line – Sickness and disease is from Satan, period.  We have to be confident that we are fighting against Satan not God.  God's will is to heal ALL, just like it is His will to save ALL.

Next time we will talk about receiving healing.

Dear Akhil, thank you for making this so clear. I studied this when I was working on my Master's in Theology and I understand exactly what you are saying. I am surprised at the "reasons" for your illness based on what others have determined. Job comes to mind.... You, my friend, are loved by God, deservingly so, and I have no doubt that complete healing can take place. That's what I am praying for for you. With love and prayers, Susan

We haven't progressed at all from John 9, have we?

"Who sinned, this man or his parents that he might be born blind?"

To hear that people (people who love you and whom you've trusted) are asking this question of you pains me. I suspect it pains God, too.

What is interesting is the interpretations of Theology over the years. The Hindu scriptures have so many versions. The Bible, from Aremaic through Roman, Hebrew, and many English editions.. The true meaning is for each individual to understand and experience at various levels of our existence.
The Dead Sea Scrolls throw interesting light on "Christ Consciousness". Gregg Braden has wonderful talks on this.
Eckhart Tolle and HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar have amazing talks and workshops for the experiential mind.

Here are some excerpts...

"Only the mind experiences. All the experiences are of the mind. The experience of the soul is also at the level of the mind. When the mind is calm, then the soul is experienced. The soul is an embodiment of joy.
Mind experiences sorrow. When the mind dissolves, then joy is experienced.

Firstly, when we violate the laws of nature, then we suffer. Second, ignorance - if you don’t know what you are eating and you eat some wrong things, then also you will suffer, right? Third is, if you have violated some laws at some time in the past, in the previous life, that also can bring some karma. So karmaja, agyanaja, and pragyaparadh; three things bring suffering. How to remove the ignorance? Through knowledge and understanding; Asking questions like you are doing.

Are you suffering? Tell me if it is your suffering or others’ suffering.

With regards to others affection and suffering....
Don’t give it too much importance. Move on!
In life these events happen, such occasions come. Such negativity comes, pleasantness comes; so what! None of them will stay forever, they come for a minute and they go.
As I said, wisdom or yoga is a way to avoid suffering, avoid fear and avoid unpleasantness.
When this is lacking then you see suffering. That is why in Christianity they say suffering is essential because through suffering you reach the goal. When you suffer then you understand and you learn a lesson.

In the East they say suffering is avoidable and not necessary. Life is bliss!
You know why? This is because wisdom, yoga and meditation are ways to avoid suffering which has not yet come.
So suffering is not inevitable if you know yoga and meditation."

If you get a chance, gentle read ASHTAVKRA GITA.. I can send a copy

Hi Akhil,

You are in my heart and prayers. It bothers me to hear that some have perhaps, despite possibly good intentions, have brought you more discouragement and grief. Such was the case for Job when he needed encouragement from his friends most. It further bothers me to think that my comments in a previous post may have been perceived as similarly callous. If my wording was unclear I apologize and would like to clarify with less embellishment and rhetoric.

I do not hastily blame people's suffering on their personal sins, nor would I say that God is using suffering as a form of punishment; rather as you pointed out, I meant that all suffering, sickness and death itself, can be attributed to the Fall, the sin of the first Adam, our parent and representative.

Furthermore, as you and Patty suggested, I joyfully echo that suffering is foremost an opportunity for God to display his glory!

But how does he do it? And better yet, how DID he do it?

Through the cross of Christ. What does the cross tell us? It tells us that God supplied our greatest need - healing from the guilt of sin. Which proves God has our best interest at heart! Furthermore, more than just Job or Joseph, God himself understands our suffering, for Christ himself suffered, the Just for the unjust, and therefore we have a sympathetic Friend, Comforter and High Priest. Lastly, it tells us of God's future grace! Like Jeter, I do not believe that God will always provide immediate healing. But the cross promises for God's people - those who have repented and believed in Christ - that suffering in this life is temporary and that God's people will receive new, glorified bodies that are free from corruption and sickness.

So, even if God does not heal you now, you CAN find joy and hope and comfort by looking to Christ. And when God's people take joy and comfort in Christ amidst their trials, thats how he gets more glory!
